Series "Faces"

The theme of my drawings is the portrait—as both an independent work of art and a form of artistic, meditative, and philosophical reflection on the subject portrayed. Through them, I seek to capture the spirit in the material, or the material held by the spirit. These are well-known people and characters to whom I have been deeply connected throughout my life. And yet, as I explore every millimeter of the body and uncover layer by layer of the soul, I feel as though I am meeting them again for the first time.

The goal of my work is for each mark to find its natural place—to describe, define, and situate it in space, time, atmosphere, and overall feeling. There is no sound, no play, no movement; the face remains “frozen” in a single moment, though never merely petrified. I rely on the undeniable power of stillness to keep the portrait clear, convincing, and powerful. The format is always the same, and the frame is carefully chosen. The technique varies, but always meets the condition that it can be endlessly erased and reworked. Through close observation and precise expression, I strive to grasp and convey the subtlety of shades, the tension and harmony between parts of the head, dynamic stillness—or still dynamism—on a single surface. I aim to feel and render the finest texture of skin, the sharpness and firmness of hair, the smoothness and slipperiness of the eye; the sadness in a gaze, the sorrowful curve of the lips, or a defiant resolve..

This search—for softness like feathers or strength like steel, whether physical or psychological—draws me ever deeper, urging me to evolve and refine my style, seeking new and more convincing ways to express what I see and feel. At the same time, I try to incorporate my personal impressions, gained through close observation of the model, by altering or emphasizing certain natural features. I aim to communicate my fascination with artistic elements such as texture, light, shape, surface, and line—but also with elements beyond the purely artistic: psychological depth, character, atmosphere. I hope to awaken in the viewer a desire for further exploration—beyond the portrait, beyond drawing. In my practice, the finesse of observation, expression, emphasis, and the interplay between these elements are the key parameters that define the quality of the work.
